London to Pitlochry by Train

By Pitlochry Guide editors · Updated 27 October 2026

The quickest way from London to Pitlochry is the one direct daytime train: LNER’s 12:03 from London King’s Cross, which runs right through to Pitlochry in about 6h20 and gets in at around 18:20. It was the only through train on the weekday timetable we checked, so if a midday start suits you, it is the train to take.

Changing at Edinburgh

The other daytime choice is an LNER train from King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley, about 4h10 with eleven stops, and a ScotRail train for the last 1h50 north. These left King’s Cross at 05:48, 08:30, 12:30 and 14:30 and took about seven hours in all, including a wait of around 50 minutes at Waverley, so on a typical run the 05:48 reaches Pitlochry at about 12:42 and the 08:30 at around 15:25.

A third option starts from London Euston instead: Avanti West Coast to Preston, TransPennine Express to Haymarket, then ScotRail on to Pitlochry. It has two changes rather than one and showed no time advantage over the King’s Cross trains, so it is mainly worth knowing about if Euston is the easier station for you to reach.

The Caledonian Sleeper

The overnight option needs no change at all. The Caledonian Sleeper leaves London Euston at 21:15 and runs straight through to Pitlochry, arriving at about 06:16 after around nine hours on board. It suits travellers who would rather spend the night moving than lose a day to the trip, and it has you in Pitlochry in time for breakfast with the whole day ahead.

The sleeper’s own timetable, which runs to 12 December 2026, shows this service calling at Pitlochry on Sunday to Friday nights, with a different departure time on Sundays, so check the night you want on sleeper.scot before you book.

Train or car

Driving is 474 miles via the M6 and takes about 8h25, so every daytime rail option gets you there sooner, the direct LNER train by about two hours. Only the sleeper takes longer than the car, and it does its hours overnight.

Arriving

Whichever train you come in on, Pitlochry station is 357 metres from Atholl Road, about five minutes’ walk.
